As the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time for children to enjoy outdoor play, explore nature, and soak up some sunshine. But with summer on the horizon, it’s also important to think about safety, from sun protection to water awareness and staying cool and hydrated. This season presents wonderful opportunities for learning and play, and with a little preparation, we can help keep children safe while they thrive.
At Wee Watch, Providers focus on creating nurturing environments where children can play, learn, and grow safely, whether indoors or out.
Sun Safety: More Than Just Sunscreen
Children’s skin is delicate and protecting it from harmful UV rays is essential. Make sunscreen part of your daily routine. Apply it generously before going outside and reapply throughout the day, especially after water play. Encourage hats, lightweight protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak sun hours (usually 10am–4pm). And remember, shaded play doesn’t mean “no fun,” it can be just as engaging and cool!
Water Awareness: Play Smart, Stay Safe
Water play is a favourite summer activity, but even shallow water can pose risks for young children. Whether it’s a splash pad, kiddie pool, or a day at the lake, supervision is key. Always ensure an adult is within arm’s reach and designate a “water watcher.” A reminder that drowning is silent, there is often no splashing or yelling. That’s why constant supervision and eyes on at all times is so important. Also make sure children understand simple safety rules like walking (not running) near water and wearing appropriate flotation devices as needed.
Licensed childcare settings, like Wee Watch homes, provide programming that ensures children get at least two hours of outdoor time each day, weather permitting. Our homes also follow strict safety standards to keep children safe during all activities, including when outdoors.
Staying Cool and Hydrated
Heat affects children differently than adults. Because they are smaller and more active, young bodies can become overheated quickly. Make hydration a priority. Offer water frequently, before children even say they’re thirsty, and keep cool areas available for rest. Avoid strenuous play during the hottest parts of the day and embrace creative indoor or shaded activities when needed.
Ready for Summer Routines
Summer brings schedule changes with road trips, family visits, and longer days to fill. Helping children transition between routines smoothly supports their emotional wellbeing. Providers at Wee Watch adapt their programming for summer by including more outdoor play, seasonal STEM activities, nature exploration, and creative arts, while keeping routines familiar where possible. Talk about the “summer plan” ahead of time, maintain consistent meal or sleep schedules, and involve children in planning low-risk activities.
